PFOS/PFOA Foam Contamination

Everyday there is a new headline about PFOS/PFOA environmental contamination.

PFOS/PFOA is now known to be toxic, carcinogenic, and linked to cancer, It is no wonder the incidence of cancer in Firefighters and Fire Investigators is 30% higher that any other occupation. Firefighters are dying. This pollution/contamination issue has reached such epic proportions that States are banning the use of Foam and the US EPA has implemented US EPA 537 Modified Test to test the safety of municipal drinking water. This test measures the presence of PFOS/PFOA as low as parts per billion (ppb).

Many of the fires firefighters respond to are car fires and today’s car fires must be approached with great caution. To make cars lighter for better fuel mileage, many components are made of Class D magnesium.  Applying water or foam will cause a dangerous explosion that could cause injury to the firefighter or damage to expensive gear.

In this video, you will see firefighters confronted with a fully involved, magnesium steering column burning at over 5,000ºF. For many reasons, we recommend car fires be approached with a 3% solution of F-500 Encapsulator Agent. These firefighters were using only 1% F-500 EA, and yet you will see there were no explosions. It just took a little longer to cool the magnesium.

Using F-500 EA on car fires not only provides that extra margin of safety from explosive magnesium, but also is recommended by third parties for today’s lithium-ion battery, hybrid and electric cars. You may think water does a great job of cooling a fire, but water does not cool efficiently and creates a lot of dangerous steam. Foams are designed to form a blanket to separate the fuel from the oxygen, but foam traps in the heat, often resulting in reignition.

How to Apply F500 EA to Class D Fires

F-500 EA Rapidly Cools Class D Fires – Safely!

Never apply water or foam to Class D fires, but if you add just 3% F-500 Encapsulator Agent to the water, you change the way the droplets react with heat. A plain water drop inefficiently removes heat by steam conversion. F-500 EA droplets efficiently absorb the heat by thermal conveyance. The F-500 EA molecules form a protective skin that prevents the hydrogen flare-ups and explosions from the high temperatures of Class D metals.

Class D magnesium is found in steering columns, door and seat frames, and dashboards, so every time you approach a vehicle fire, you should protect yourself and your equipment by using F-500 EA for all car fires.  Although a 3% solution of F-500 EA is recommended for Class D fires, on car fires, a 1% solution of F-500 EA will prevent violent magflash explosions and quickly reduce the temperature.

F500 EA vs High Expansion Foam on Tire Fire

There’s only one firefighting agent that can be used to extinguish Class A, Class B polar, Class B nonpolar, Class D fires and is recommended for transformer fires and lithium-ion battery fires. And no other agent can encapsulate spilled fuels and render them nonflammable. But can F-500 EA compete head to head against high-expansion AFFF?

You bet it can.

Foam has to form a blanket to smother a fire. Even with high expansion foam, this can be a challenge on three-dimensional fires. Plus, foam does very little to cool and actually traps in the heat, causing reignition.

F500 Encapsulator Agent vs One Million Tires

On a Tuesday morning, the Watertown Fire Department responded to a tire fire in Dodge County, Wisconsin. It turned out to be the largest coordinated fire in the state of Wisconsin with 106 fire departments responding with 920 firefighters. One million tires were involved. Failing to control the fire, the Chief was told about F-500 Encapsulator Agent. Within 24 hours, a truckload of F-500 EA arrived at the Wisconsin border and was escorted by state police to the scene.

After two and a half days, on Thursday evening, they began applying F-500 EA. During the night, they were already gaining control of the fire. The F-500 EA was able to penetrate the tires, rapidly cool and encapsulate the burning oils, exuding from the tires. Overhaul continued until Sunday morning when the fire was declared to be extinguished.
