A fire department in Arizona asked us to demonstrate F-500 Encapsulator Agent on a creosote railroad tie fire. The creosote adds a Class B component to a Class A fire, so water would have trouble extinguishing this fire.  And foam is not recommended for three-dimensional fires because it can’t form a blanket to smother the fire.

Of course, F-500 EA can extinguish creosote railroad ties. The F-500 EA encapsulates the creosote, rendering it nonflammable.  It rapidly cools – if you remove the heat; you remove the fire. The Transformer Fire That Changed How Transformer Fires Are Attacked

Below, you can click on a link to a series of excellent articles in the 2nd/2010 issue of the FDNY magazine WNYF.  These articles describe a transformer fire in Queens, NY that led up to the considerable commitment by ConEdison to begin testing fire suppression agents on energized transformer fires.

F-500 Encapsulator Agent was the only suppression agent tested that could be applied to energized transformers, up to 345 kV, without harmful electrical feedback to the firefighter’s nozzle (the recommended safe distance is streaming from 125 feet). F-500 EA does not create a blanket of foam, so it is excellent on three-dimensional fires. There’s only one firefighting agent that can be used to extinguish Class A, Class B polar, Class B nonpolar, Class D fires and is recommended for energized transformer fires and lithium-ion battery fires. Fiberglass boat fires can be a challenge for water or foam. Water mostly evaporates from the intense heat and since boats are a three-dimensional fire, foam has trouble forming a blanket. And foam doesn’t cool!

But you mostly use water, which saves a lot of money, right?  Not so fast.  Even using F-500 EA at ½ % on Class A fires can save money.  Why?  Knockdown is incredibly fast with F-500 EA, so there is less property damage, less water used, fewer calls for additional water, and diking and drafting would be rare. Encapsulating Fuel Spills With F-500 EA

F-500 Encapsulator Agent extinguishes a fire by encapsulating the fuel, rapidly cooling and interrupting the free radical chain reaction, but the ability to encapsulate fuels makes F-500 EA a very versatile tool.You’re at a highway accident scene with a leaking fuel tank from one of the cars. It might be on fire. You could lay a blanket of foam. The foam sits on top of the fuel and traps in the heat. The bubbles will break down and reignition can occur.  So, you lay down more foam. This is probably a polar, ethanol-blended fuel, like E10, so you’re using expensive AR-AFFF. The fuel is still flammable, so you use absorbents to clean up the area, but now the absorbents are flammable. The absorbents must be removed at great expense as a hazardous material.

Or,

You could quickly extinguish the fire with F-500 Encapsulator Agent. With a 95 gpm nozzle, it only takes about 20 seconds to fully encapsulate an 8 gallon fuel spill. You could confirm the LELs are at near zero and allow traffic to drive through. The fuel will safely evaporate.
