Many of the fires firefighters respond to are car fires and today’s car fires must be approached with great caution. To make cars lighter for better fuel mileage, many components are made of Class D magnesium.  Applying water or foam will cause a dangerous explosion that could cause injury to the firefighter or damage to expensive gear.

In this video, you will see firefighters confronted with a fully involved, magnesium steering column burning at over 5,000ºF. For many reasons, we recommend car fires be approached with a 3% solution of F-500 Encapsulator Agent. These firefighters were using only 1% F-500 EA, and yet you will see there were no explosions. It just took a little longer to cool the magnesium.

How to Apply F500 EA to Class D Fires

F-500 EA Rapidly Cools Class D Fires – Safely!

Never apply water or foam to Class D fires, but if you add just 3% F-500 Encapsulator Agent to the water, you change the way the droplets react with heat. A plain water drop inefficiently removes heat by steam conversion. F-500 EA droplets efficiently absorb the heat by thermal conveyance. The F-500 EA molecules form a protective skin that prevents the hydrogen flare-ups and explosions from the high temperatures of Class D metals.

Class D magnesium is found in steering columns, door and seat frames, and dashboards, so every time you approach a vehicle fire, you should protect yourself and your equipment by using F-500 EA for all car fires.  Although a 3% solution of F-500 EA is recommended for Class D fires, on car fires, a 1% solution of F-500 EA will prevent violent magflash explosions and quickly reduce the temperature.

Why You Should Be Using F500 EA

If you are concerned about firefighter cancer, you should be using F500 EA.

If you are concerned about the environment, you should be using F500 EA.

Class D fires are becoming more and more common. Many magnesium components are used in today’s cars and cause a dangerous flare-up or explosion as plain water or foam is applied. Lithium batteries, being transported on our highways are a Class D hazard and even a fire in a machine shop or a supplier involved with aluminum, titanium or magnesium can present a challenge, unless you’re prepared.
