Beware of Magnesium Components in Cars

Many of the fires firefighters respond to are car fires and today’s car fires must be approached with great caution. To make cars lighter for better fuel mileage, many components are made of Class D magnesium.  Applying water or foam will cause a dangerous explosion that could cause injury to the firefighter or damage to expensive gear.

In this video, you will see firefighters confronted with a fully involved, magnesium steering column burning at over 5,000ºF. These firefighters were using only 1% F-500 EA, and yet you will see there were no magnesium explosions. Although we recommend Class D fires be approached with a 3% solution of F-500 Encapsulator Agent, 1% F-500 EA is safe for the small amount of magnesium in car fires. It just takes a little longer to cool the magnesium.

Using F-500 EA on car fires not only provides that extra margin of safety, preventing magnesium flash, but also is recommended by third parties for today’s lithium-ion battery, hybrid and electric car fires. And if there’s a fuel spill, F-500 EA will not only extinguish both polar Class B ethanol-blended E10 and nonpolar Class B diesel fuel, but it will safely encapsulate the fuel spill, allowing the fuel to quickly evaporate without the fear of ignition.

This video shows the impressive Burn Back Resistance of F-500 Encapsulator Agent.  Applied at only 1%, the wood won’t ignite, even with a 2000°F torch.

Why You Should Be Using F500 EA

If you are concerned about firefighter cancer, you should be using F500 EA.

If you are concerned about the environment, you should be using F500 EA.

If you are concerned about lithium-ion battery car fires, you should be using F500 EA.

If you are concerned about Class D fires or mag flash during car fires, you should be using F500 EA.

Extinguishing a Three Dimensional Fire

This short video shows how effective F-500 Encapsulator Agent is on three-dimensional fires. Foam is not recommended for three-dimensional fires because it can’t create a blanket to smother the fire. In fact, NFPA 11 Annex A.1.1 states, “Foam is not suitable for three-dimensional flowing liquid fuel fires or for gas fires.”

F-500 EA extinguishes a fire in three ways. It encapsulates hydrocarbon fuel and vapors, rendering them nonflammable. It also rapidly cools the fuel and structure. If you remove the heat; you remove the fire. Finally, F-500 EA interrupts the free radical chain reaction, which virtually eliminates toxins in the smoke, including cancer-causing toxins.

Solar Panel Fires Need F500 Encapsulator Agent

You have homes and businesses in your area with solar panels. Whether the building or the solar panels are on fire, you should be concerned.  If the sun is shining, the panels are electrified.  Be safe – use F-500 EA for all solar panel fires.

ConEdison and FDNY found F-500 Encapsulator Agent was the only agent tested that could be applied to energized transformers, tested at 345 kV with negligible electrical feedback to the nozzle. Transformers should be de-energized before fighting transformer fires, but the margin of safety is there for the firefighters, in case nearby equipment is energized.  Remember, foam is highly conductive and should never be used for these fires.

Solar panels often have lithium-ion battery storage.  If these batteries are on fire, again, you want to use F-500 EA.  Multiple companies have tested, recommended and use F-500 EA for lithium-ion battery protection.

Today’s Challenging Technology Fires Need F-500 Encapsulator Agent

Among the many modern challenges facing firefighters are Class C fires related to aging transformers in the United States, the growing use of lithium-ion batteries for energy storage and solar panels for residential, commercial and industrial applications.

Facts:

Transformer Fires – The average transformer in the United States is 40 years old; one in five will result in a fire.  Neither water, nor foam will extinguish this Class B, three-dimensional fire in a reasonable time and powders don’t cool the massive metal.  F-500 Encapsulator Agent has been tested and recommended by ConEdison for application on de-energized transformer fires, however, tests conducted up to 345 kV proved a 3% F-500 EA solution creates negligible electrical feedback to the nozzle, streaming from 125 feet, if energized peripheral equipment is contacted with the stream.

Lithium-ion Batteries – Multiple companies have found F-500 EA to be the only practical agent to extinguish electric and hybrid car fires, as well as lithium-ion battery storage facilities.

Solar Panel Fires – As long as the sun is shining, solar panels continue producing electricity. Foam is conductive and should never be used for these fires. F-500 EA will cool the panels and extinguish the fire, without electrical feedback to the nozzle.

Progress is Good

We’re getting all new roofing and and some extensive remodeling to our warehouse. We had to move to a temporary warehouse for the next couple of months. Kudos to our staff for the 4 long days of moving from one warehouse to the other with zero interruptions of inbound or outbound shipments! We are looking forward to moving back into our freshly minted digs, soon!

A fire department in Arizona asked us to demonstrate F-500 Encapsulator Agent on a creosote railroad tie fire. The creosote adds a Class B component to a Class A fire, so water would have trouble extinguishing this fire.  And foam is not recommended for three-dimensional fires because it can’t form a blanket to smother the fire.

Of course, F-500 EA can extinguish creosote railroad ties. The F-500 EA encapsulates the creosote, rendering it nonflammable.  It rapidly cools – if you remove the heat; you remove the fire. Fighting Class D Fires with F500 EA

Never apply water or foam to Class D fires, but if you add just 3% F-500 Encapsulator Agent to the water, you change the way the droplets react with heat. A plain water drop inefficiently removes heat by steam conversion. F-500 EA droplets efficiently absorb the heat by thermal conveyance. The F-500 EA molecules form a protective skin that prevents the hydrogen flare-ups and explosions from the high temperatures of Class D metals.

Class D magnesium is found in steering columns, door and seat frames, and dashboards, so every time you approach a vehicle fire, you should protect yourself and your equipment by using F-500 EA for all car fires.
